Profile

Karin Bendixen is a journalist (member of The Danish Union of Journalists) and holds a Master in Journalism & Sociologi (Cand.Public.) She has a Diploma in Internet Journalism and has taken courses in Labour Market Issues and Usability training.

She has been communications officer at various organisations.

In 2006 she participated in an eight week Nordic journalist course at NJC under Nordic Council about Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and Europe. The course includes travelling to Kaliningrad, Lithuanian, Brussels, Strasbourg and Berlin.

From 1996-2004 Karin Bendixen was Head of Communication at the Danish Centre for Accessibility, responsible for communications and developing methods in relation to accessibility and Design for All and securing user involvement in projects related to product design, building environment and IT.

For the last 15 years, she has been actively involved, nationally as well as internationally, in Design for All activities. Apart from having interviewed a large number of Europe’s key figures and enthusiasts within Design for All, she is the author of publications and has written numerous articles published in various media on this subject.  

Lately she’s been an adviser for the “Design for All & Accessibility Strategy” for The Aarhus School of Architecture. The Department of Design is responsible for the strategy. Karin has been appointed as a member of the jury of a new Danish competition “Labels and packing”. The competition is arranged by the Danish National Patient Safety Agency and the “Tryg Foundation”. Bexcom has been participating in the project “Products for the multifunctional room (family room) – build on user driven innovation and Design for All” in cooperation with Design Concern A/S. She is writing articles for the Danish Architecture Magazine “Danske Ark Byg”. Latest she is participating in a project grated by the governments new ambitious project for User driven innovation.

She was editor and concept developer of the first Danish accessibility magazine and editor of ”Crisp & Clear European Magazine on Design for All”, published by EIDD, as well as “Form & Funktion – Nordic Design for All Magazine”.  She has been Project Manager and member of and secretary to the panel of judges of the Danish Ministry of Culture Award “The Accessibility Award”. 2001-2003.

She has lectured and been running workshops on the subject in Denmark and abroad.

Karin Bendixen has participated in a number of national and international research projects concerning Design for All and user needs, usability in relation to products, medicine packaging, communication etc.

Karin Bendixen is also educated as an Occupational Therapist (many years ago); she has worked in the rehabilitation field and as a teacher of rehabilitation, ergonomics, research methods, project work, communications etc.

    • the Executive Committee of Design for All - Europe (EIDD). 2002-2006.
    • the steering committee for “RSA Inclusive Design Resource” , RSA, Royal Society for Arts, UK 2003
    • the Network of Centres of Excellence in Design for All, part of the eEurope Action Plan 2002 – Aug. 2004
    • The Nordic research group concerning the status of Design for All in the Nordic countries (Nordic Co-operation on Disability under the Nordic Council of Ministers), 2002 & 2004
    • the Local Organising Committees in Denmark (LOC) concerning the World Design Congress ERA05. (The three international design organisations ICSID, Icograda and IFI organise a joint congress in Copenhagen in September 2005). 2003

Bexcom

In September 2004, Karin Bendixen started Bexcom, a business primarily focusing on sociological issues, Design for All, communication, research and user involvement.
